Take Me To Your Leader.

March 17, 2010

Imagine a football game where the scoreboard jumps onto the field and starts tackling the opponent.  That wild idea becomes reality in the Marvel Superstars Trading Card Game.  Leader characters start with 50 Health points.  When the total reaches zero, Game Over.

Each Leader character also joins the fight, and has a unique and flavorful charge ability.  Whatever your individual gaming style happens to be, there will be one for you.  Storm bounces, Invisible Woman protects, Blade slices, and Professor X recruits.  Today we are posting the 8 previewed Leader cards from the mothership.  That means there are 7 left to reveal from the Marvel Premier booster set.  Which one will you choose?  Take me to your leader.

November 17, 2009

Yes dear friends, that is official. We know the graphic design that will be a huge part of our lives for years to come. All cards from the Marvel Superstars Trading Card Game will have that image on the back.

Gorgeous. Simply gorgeous.

And now for something completely different.

That is an actual photograph taken by our friend Susan Silver at Bow Lake in Banff National Park this summer on her journey through Western Canada. Breathtaking.

As the TCG community descends on Indianapolis for GenCon 2009, I have the same feeling of awe. In less than 24 hours, the first humans outside the offices of Upper Deck Entertainment will be exposed to the glory of the Marvel Superstars Trading Card Game. We will finally gaze upon the future of our industry. This is it.

This is all speculation.

August 10, 2009

marvelmasterpieces

In less than one week, the truth about the Marvel Superstars Trading Card Game will be revealed. Until then we wait and wonder.

Will the art include magnificent hip-hop hilarity like that of the Bryan Turner masterpieces displayed above? We do not know yet.

Will the character selection include obscure oddities such as Squirrel Girl and Alpha Flight? We do not know yet.

Will the game mechanics be anything like the games we already know and love? We do not know yet.

Soon the speculation will end. This weekend at GenCon Indianapolis will be a revelation. Marvel Superstars will finally be crystal clear.

Artist Spotlight: Dave DeVries.

August 4, 2009

chaosmagick

Dave Devries is my favorite artist in the whole world. From the mid-nineties Marvel Masterpieces to the spectacular contributions to Vs. System, his paintings make life worth living for a superhero card collector like me. We do not know which artists will be featured in the Marvel Superstars Trading Card Game, but we are keeping our fingers crossed. It doesn’t get any better than this.

What will Marvel Superstars be like?

August 4, 2009

DerangedHermit

For those of us who spend countless hours at the kitchen table flipping cardboard versions of our favorite characters, the last ten days before the debut of Upper Deck’s new Marvel Superstars Trading Card Game is excruciating bliss. We cannot wait to find out which legends will be included. We are on pins and needles wondering what new mechanics will drive the game engine. We are wild with wonder, wanting desperately to wield the waiting win conditions.

There are certain basic building blocks of Trading Card Game structure that will probably be part of our new strategy experience. Marvel Superstars may have some of these aspects:

1. Individual deck construction.

2. Specific deck size and limited card ratios.

3. Turn based play, drawing cards each turn.

4. Starting life points that are subtracted with success until victory.

5. Character cards.

6. Effect cards.

7. Specific sequencing within each turn.

8. A cost system to control card power.

How will those things be expressed in the Marvel Superstars system? We do not know. August 13th will be here before you know it, and a brand new world will be revealed. For now we wait and wonder.

Marvel Superstar Runoff Election: Captain America vs. Iron Man.

August 3, 2009

Those are some exquisitely quirky interpretations of the characters in question. Adam Cline did original art sketch cards for the Marvel Masterpieces set, and they are magnificent. Here’s hoping that the future artwork for Marvel Superstars Trading Card game reaches that level. Now this.

We have a tie that needs breaking in our community survey, and it comes down to the two stars of Civil War.

Vote early, vote often.

Artist Spotlight: Mark D. Bright.

August 1, 2009

markbright0

Today we celebrate the old-school classic style of Mark “Doc” Bright. Two decades of comic book fans have enjoyed his steady lines and bold strokes. He helped to create the wedding of Medusa and Black Bolt, as well as the storyline that was eventually used in the Iron Man movie. When the art is chosen for the new Marvel Superstars Trading Card Game, perhaps he could represent the traditional renditions for generations to come.

Marvel Superstar #3: Hulk.

July 31, 2009

hulk

Fantasy as you like it. Started gray, turned green, currently red. The Hulk is incredible. He is also the consensus third most popular character in our survey.

Everyone gets mad. Other people make us want to make a big fist and crush things to bits. Bruce Banner’s alter ego brings the savage beatdown that we secretly desire.  Hulk Smash!

Marvel Superstar #3 is Hulk.
