Fifteen Leaders.

September 5, 2009

As we begin to put the pieces of the upcoming Marvel Superstars Trading Card Game together in our minds, a certain skeletal structure emerges. The main spine of its mechanics will be the Leaders.

Leader characters will keep track of victory and defeat by their very being. They start with 50 points of defense, and when they reach zero it is Game Over.

Yesterday, The Ben Seck spilled the beans on the total number of Leaders in the first set. There will be fifteen. Spread among five teams, these lucky 15 give us the perfect excuse for some serious speculation. Taking into account the fact that the Marvel Superstars Premiere Set will only be using existing Marvel movies, here is our prediction for the inaugural leader lineup. We shall see how accurate this will be.

Iron Man and Hulk.

Fantastic Four.

Mr. Fantastic, Invisible Woman, Human Torch, and Thing.

Wolverine, Storm, and Professor X.

Marvel Knights.

Blade, Daredevil, and Ghost Rider.

Dr. Doom, Magneto, and Jean Grey as the Dark Phoenix.

  1. I was kind of hoping for Kingpin or Bullseye. The less X-Men 3 the better.

  2. Dude, Cyclops. I agree with Chis ’bout Kingpin too.

  3. Bullseye and Cyclops would be keen indeed.

  4. Ummmm, did you leave Spider Man out on purpose? I’m pretty sure with 3 movies he’ll be in there probably with Doc Ock as a villain. And I don’t think they would use all the F4 characters, but you never know.

  5. At this point, the rights to the Spider-Man movies are not secured. They are very confident that it will happen, but the first set will not include any webbing. These first 15 will only use the existing films minus the Spidey stuff, hence my guesses.

  6. With Spidey out of the equation at the beginning, I would expect that they’d spread the villains out a bit more. If they double dipped for villains, I’d say Sabretooth, since he does have the Origins appearance as well.

Based on the named teams, I see the breakdown you’ve put out working. Until Thor/CA … Hulk and Iron Man are the only Avengers, and it’s hard to split up the 4. Marvel Knights could include the Punisher and Elektra (who actually have 2 relatively recent movies under their belts compared to Ghost Rider and Daredevil). Blade definitely fits.

For the X-Men, Prof X and Wolverine fit … but I’m not sure about Storm. Jean Grey and Cyclops could be included. Cyclops is one of the few to be in Wolverine: Origins in addition to he original 3 (he just got killed off because he had to be Superboy’s foster dad).

Villain wise, I’d think one per franchise, so Magneto and Doom are in by default. Unfortunately, there isn’t a “great” villain for Iron Man or Hulk (yet). Maybe Iron Man 2 will give us someone cool that will be a big threat to the Avengers. Maybe Kang? Even Mandarin would be interesting. Blade is the longest running of the franchises other than X-Men, but I don’t know if there is really a villain from those movies that screams “leader”. Of the possibilities, I think Kingpin seems like the best fit. He at least fits the role of leadership.

All in all, seems like a cool game. I’ll keep my eye out for it. And heck, I may be able to get to play not only a comic book card game again, but one with HHH as well. Plus I have to team up Ryan Reynold’s from Blade Trinity with Deadpool 😉
