Our Odds for the Final Four.

November 14, 2009

With only four slots left on the list of the 15 original Marvel Superstars Leader characters to fill, we have our own wishes to reveal. As always with Legendary Cardboard, some of them are seductive underdogs that we would be crazy to actually hope for.

When calculating the odds on the inclusion of our desired final four, we made the assumption that each of the five teams would be give three different leaders in the Marvel Premier expansion set. With three Villains, two Avengers, two X-Men, two Fantastic Four, and two Marvel Knights already announced, it seems that there may be one more character chosen from each of the hero teams. These are our druthers, with some opinions about the chance of seeing them as mainstays in the intitial boxes. We are fairly sure that each of these myths will be represented by at least one supporter card, might they actually be Leaders?

Pepper Potts 20-1

Gwyneth Paltrow’s glimmering gal pal is going to get some serious action in the Iron Man 2 movie, but she probably didn’t have enough oomph in the first film. If they actually balance the teams with three leaders each they will need to find an Avenger other than Hulk and Iron Man, so she does have a hint of hope, but probably not gonna happen.

Rogue 20-1

Even though Anna Paquin is absorbing enormous amounts of popularity as a vampire right now, her role in the X-Men films may not be enough to make her a Leader character. Rogue has always been our favorite mutant, so we are taking the gloves off and crossing our fingers.

Invisible Woman 3-1

Jessica Alba seems like a sure thing, but her Leader character has not been announced yet. If the first set contains three per team, her inclusion would leave out Mr. Fantastic. Perhaps the Villains team will get more leaders than the heroes, or maybe the initial offering will have a “Fantastic Three”. We shall see.

Ghost Rider 2-1

The flaming skull may be a shoe-in if there are three leaders per team. With Elektra already representing the ninja side of Marvel Knights, Daredevil could be left looking for a future set to become a Leader character. The suspense is burning a hole in our heads, but it sure is fun to speculate while we wait.

Girl Power.

August 29, 2009

The legion of lovely ladies found inside the modern myths of the Marvel movies is peeking around the corner. The future of the Marvel Superstars Trading Card Game is coming into focus. We have seen the basic structure of the system, and it is time to speculate. How might some of our favorite superpowered female characters fit into their cardboard frames?

Storm started us off with a stare, and she usually shells an opponent with sheet lightning and showers. Her power to control the weather might shock other characters into submission, or she might conjure the wind and blow the entire board sideways to stop all attacks.

That is Callisto, and she is a Morlock. In the movies, she manifests her mental telephathy by finding and measuring mutants. And she is very, very fast. No one knows what she will do in the game, but maybe she could search the deck for a specific character card.

Rogue has always been my favorite female character in the comics. She is all about the extreme physical empathy. When she comes in direct skin contact with another superhero, she absorbs their powers and gets to use them for herself. She can totally relate. Her abilities in the Marvel Superstars Trading Card game might allow her to copy another effect and use powers that she didn’t have before.

Jean Grey filled with the Phoenix Force and became the femme fatale to end all in the film X-Men: Last Stand. When Marvel Superstars is released in February, she will probably be pretty pricey. Late in the game, no matter who is in the lead, there is a distinct possibility that there will be shattering global consequences to explode an entire opposing team. She might even take her own allies with her.

So far, no one knows for sure.  Right now we are just guessing about the cardboard incarnations of the girl superheroes of the Marvel movies. We cannot yet be certain what their abilities will look like, but it is beautiful fun to wonder while we wait.

Hot Information.

August 19, 2009

Just in case you have been living under a rock for the past couple weeks, today we will take a moment to summarize the molten core of Marvel Superstars TCG source material that has been released to the public.

The game will feature high-quality screen images from the vast library of Marvel movies. We will be shuffling Scarlett Johansson into Anna Paquin and topdecking Jessica Alba.

We might even be graced by the exquisitely evil cardboard presence of Deacon Frost, all over again.

When the Marvel Superstars Trading Card Game gets up and running in February, we will also have a brand new tournament structure in which to flip our favorite heroes and villains. The winding road will include the thrill of victory and the agony of defeat. It will feature Sealed Pack, Booster Draft, and Constructed formats. It will culminate in a World Championship.

The Marvel Superstars vehicle is revving up and ready to roar. Hop in, this is going to be a ride to remember.

Gorgeous Gaming Ahead.

August 11, 2009

None of the details have been confirmed, but the future of the Marvel Superstars Trading Card Game is starting to come into focus. It’s a beautiful thing.

Jessica Alba flinging forcefields with the Fantastic Four. Halle Berry zapping opponents with mutant Weather Witch lightning bolts. Maybe even Eva Mendes smoldering as Ghost Rider’s girlfriend.

It seems we will soon have spectacular cardboard incarnations of our favorite Hollywood luminaries to grace our gaming experience. This will be a brand new thing for those of us that are accustomed to trolls and dragons and sorcerers. It will be an invitation to the wider world audience, most of whom are totally familiar with Marvel’s magnificent stable of superheroes only through the movies. It is an unexpected development that is making us shuffle our expectations and retool our plans for the future.

We still haven’t absorbed all the implications, and we are anxiously awaiting more information about what other smashing surprises lie in store. Very exciting times.
