Lovely Leader Ladies At Their Leisure.

March 26, 2010

There are three female Leader characters appearing in the Premiere Edition of Marvel Superstars, and it will be awfully difficult not to play with them. Their faces leave an indelible mark, and their strategies summon like sirens. The first, obviously, is Halle Berry as Storm.

Usually when the word “bounce” and “Halle Berry” are combined, we are talking about something else. In Marvel Superstars, she commands even more attention with her natural abilities. Storm’s charge power is simply nuts. It can clear any size Supporter from the board with the wave of a hand.

Yes, that is Jessica Alba. I guess she was trying to apply the antidote for the extreme blonde they made her wear in the Fantastic Four movies, and that shot makes me grin every single time.

Sue Storm sets up a sizable wall when it comes to Marvel Superstars. Swarm strategies will be neutered and aggro players will come up way short. She stalls – sensationally.

Ha! That is an actual photograph of Jennifer Garner in high school. No wonder she is bringing the pain with her Elektra Leader card. This lovely lady learned her lesson, and now she is Marvel Superstars’ most dangerous assassin.

This Girl Is Trouble.

March 16, 2010

Yikes.  The Elektra deck is looking more terrifying with each new preview card.  That 5-drop will start thinning the enemy hand on your second turn?  People are going to HATE seeing that chick hit the board.  Especially when she can’t be killed.

Very, very scary.  Make sure you click on over the the mothership for the full article.  This girl is trouble.

True Cardboard Love.

We just got that Valentine from the mothership, with our favorite mutant female. In her honor we will hereby spotlight all the women so far previewed in Marvel Superstars.

Love one another.

Breaking Superstars News: Leaders Are Backed With Bases.

February 10, 2010

Check this out. In a brilliant design decision, the developers of the Marvel Superstars Trading Card Game have revealed their solution for easily keeping Leader characters and Base Resources from getting mixed with your main deck.

They are front and back on the same card!

We do not know which bases will back which leaders, but we are ready to play!

The Line-up is Set.

November 16, 2009

The waiting and wondering is over. Our eyes have seen the glory of the full line-up of Leader characters for the inaugural set of the Marvel Superstars Trading Card Game, and it is good. We have a Halle Berry.

Zap! Storm is joining Wolverine and Professor X as the first Leaders of the X-Men team affiliation.

Ouch! Ghost Rider burned a path to the final Marvel Knights spot on the Leader list. Hot times ahead.

How perfect! Mr. Fantastic will be joining his invisible mate as a Leader in the Marvel Premier set, which means that the Avengers will be left with only Hulk and Iron Man to represent.

Wow. The line-up is set, and it is simply magnificent. Here are the final 15 announced Leader characters. Get ready for a cardboard party unlike anything mankind has ever seen:

Avengers: Hulk and Iron Man

Fantastic Four: All four.

Marvel Knights: Blade, Elektra, and Ghost Rider.

X-Men: Professor Xavier, Storm, and Wolverine.

Villains: Abomination, Dr. Doom, and Magneto.

Elektra is a Leader, and she has some serious support.

November 4, 2009

Yes indeed it is true. Jennifer Garner will be available to build your deck around. Elektra Natchios has been revealed as one of the first fifteen Leader Characters in the Marvel Superstars Trading Card Game. Strategy sessions will never be the same.

The smoldering crimson ninja will not be required to defeat her cardboard foes singlehandedly, however. She will have support in the form of several different versions of herself and a slew of significant other characters from the Marvel movies. Here is the official text from Upper Deck introducing Supporters:

Supporter Characters

As a game progresses, you can call supporters to your side. Like leaders, supporters can attack and intercept enemy characters. In addition to the cost in its upper right corner, each supporter has: A health value above and to the right of its text box. If a supporter accumulates damage equal to or greater than its health, it’s eliminated. A force value to the left of its health, which is the amount of damage it deals in a fight.

It remains to be seen how many separate versions of Elektra we will be turning sideways on our kitchen tables and tournament halls. We can only guess which superheroes will show up to battle by her side. For now, we are simply basking in the red glow of her Superstar status. Elektra is a Leader.

Legendary Obscurity Reinvented.

August 30, 2009

The stories of superheroes that we tell each other from the pages of the comic books are passed on as the modern myths of our time through their film adaptations. Celluloid incarnations of our favorite characters and storylines spread the word far and wide. What were once obscure tales on thin paper pages have become celebrated legends of the silver screen.

Movies like Elektra may not have captured the collective attention to the same degree as some of her more well-known superpowered conterparts, but she will probably receive a big boost in popularity as a member of the Marvel Knights team in the upcoming Marvel Superstars Trading Card Game. When the rosters are revealed at the beginning of 2010, the Villains team might actually include her cinematic rival Tattoo.

We do not know what characters will be included, but Tattoo’s ability to manifest living animals from the drawings on his body might end up fulfilling many of my own personal trading card game wishes.

Tattoo could search the deck for smaller character cards and put them into play. That would take his obscure legend and reinvent it within a Marvel Superstars swarm strategy. Will it actually happen? Only time will tell.
