Lovely Leader Ladies At Their Leisure.

March 26, 2010

There are three female Leader characters appearing in the Premiere Edition of Marvel Superstars, and it will be awfully difficult not to play with them. Their faces leave an indelible mark, and their strategies summon like sirens. The first, obviously, is Halle Berry as Storm.

Usually when the word “bounce” and “Halle Berry” are combined, we are talking about something else. In Marvel Superstars, she commands even more attention with her natural abilities. Storm’s charge power is simply nuts. It can clear any size Supporter from the board with the wave of a hand.

Yes, that is Jessica Alba. I guess she was trying to apply the antidote for the extreme blonde they made her wear in the Fantastic Four movies, and that shot makes me grin every single time.

Sue Storm sets up a sizable wall when it comes to Marvel Superstars. Swarm strategies will be neutered and aggro players will come up way short. She stalls – sensationally.

Ha! That is an actual photograph of Jennifer Garner in high school. No wonder she is bringing the pain with her Elektra Leader card. This lovely lady learned her lesson, and now she is Marvel Superstars’ most dangerous assassin.

Support Kit.

March 25, 2010

That is an order list from GTS Distribution, and we cannot confirm the accuracy of the release date. We can, however, use the potential of a Marvel Superstars “Support Kit” to launch us into a preview of our favorite current curve. These are the Supporters that we like most at each drop so far.

He is cooler than a cucumber and his hotties are unequalled in the industry. Now Tony Stark will be charging leaders left and right, no matter what team they are on.

The single focus on card advantage cannot be overstated with that one-eyed monster. Again, quite splashable in any deck you can imagine.

This guy was chosen purely for his cool factor. Perhaps some sort of swarm deck will be able to satisfy his thirst, but for now I just want to try out that evil sneer.

Two Villains in a row, and this one is serious tech. Pick an Action, any Action. I have never seen this blue beauty look quite so cute, or as absolutely playable.

That’s just nasty. She slices, she dices, she empties your hand in a flash of cold steel. Ouch.

Oh my. Check that out. Get him angry for exactly 10 damage. You will like him when he’s angry.

Ugly, tricky, and undeniably dangerous. Abomination indeed.

We end our kit with the original Marvel movie hero. Still wicked cool, and updated for cardboard bliss inducement. Building a deck that can get that bad boy on the board to bust a Blade Flurry? That’s the kind of thing I live for. Stay tuned to this station for frequent updates on the actual release of Marvel Superstars, and try not to drool!

Alter Egos: Betty Ross.

March 22, 2010

That card spells big trouble for any little opponent of Hulk in the Marvel Superstars Trading Card Game. Not only will it boost the Health of all your large green Supporters, but it will add three more points of obstacle to enemy victory.

Yes, Betty Ross protects your Hulk Leader like a magic Elf.

Sure, Liv Tyler is the daughter of that dude from Aerosmith. Yes, she was great in Empire Records and had a wicked cool cameo in U-turn. Still, she will always be Arwen to me.

Now she will be hitting the table in Marvel Superstars, and her Hulk will be swelling to nearly unbeatable proportions. It’s enough to chase a bunch of Nazguls down the river all over again. Happy Monday!

Take Me To Your Leader.

March 17, 2010

Imagine a football game where the scoreboard jumps onto the field and starts tackling the opponent.  That wild idea becomes reality in the Marvel Superstars Trading Card Game.  Leader characters start with 50 Health points.  When the total reaches zero, Game Over.

Each Leader character also joins the fight, and has a unique and flavorful charge ability.  Whatever your individual gaming style happens to be, there will be one for you.  Storm bounces, Invisible Woman protects, Blade slices, and Professor X recruits.  Today we are posting the 8 previewed Leader cards from the mothership.  That means there are 7 left to reveal from the Marvel Premier booster set.  Which one will you choose?  Take me to your leader.

This Girl Is Trouble.

March 16, 2010

Yikes.  The Elektra deck is looking more terrifying with each new preview card.  That 5-drop will start thinning the enemy hand on your second turn?  People are going to HATE seeing that chick hit the board.  Especially when she can’t be killed.

Very, very scary.  Make sure you click on over the the mothership for the full article.  This girl is trouble.

Our Favorites So Far.

March 15, 2010

Today we are taking stock.  With over 50 Marvel Superstars cards revealed so far, we have enough to play favorites.  Let’s choose the best of each card type, starting with Base Resources.  Each player starts the game with three bases in play, so the action can begin immediately.  The Baxter Building card is a magnificent example of perfectly matching the movie image with the card frame.  Check out the parallel curves on the top and bottom.  Aesthetic brilliance, excellent on the eyes.

New York is the obvious choice for our favorite City Resource, since it is the only one we have seen!  Every time we catch this shot in the Incredible Hulk movie, our fingers start itching for real Marvel Superstars cards.  Gotta love that Lady Liberty.

Favorite Leader character was a tough decision.  The Storm card calls to us with an open hand, but Jessica Alba’s eye is just a bit louder.  Very difficult choice.  Our article avatar was the deciding vote.

This pick was much easier than it should have been. We have never, ever seen Mystique look so cute. Yes cute. Shots like this are going to make the Premier Edition of the Marvel Superstars Trading Card Game one of the most thrilling games ever to be released. We are in bunches, waiting to see what other surprising photographs were chosen to embellish our favorite Marvel movie characters. Good times.

Our top Special Action card is not only a favorite all-time movie moment, it is incredibly powerful in the game. If Blade can build a deck that consistently gets to his 8-drop, the Flurries will be spectacular. We simply cannot wait for the full set so this bad boy can start busting.

We end with The End of Days, our favorite previewed Action card. That scene in Ghost Rider was cool enough before it was immortalized on cardboard. Now it will live forever.

Upper Deck Makes A Reassuring Statement.

March 14, 2010

In case you heard about the recent layoffs and were worried, ICv2 has gotten a statement about the future from Upper Deck, and it sounds promising. Here is the money quote:

“Upper Deck’s entertainment division is not being ‘shut down.’ Upper Deck has several upcoming entertainment releases and the Company expects to remain in the entertainment category.”

So it looks like Marvel Superstars will live to fight another day!
